The NEPRA Extends K-Electric’s Permit for Another Six Months

NEPRA provisionally extends K-Electric distribution license for month.

The city’s lone electricity distribution firm, K-Electric (KE), has applied for a renewal of its license because it is going to run out after 20 years. The license has been extended by NEPRA for a further six months, during which time the electricity regulator will hold hearings on the renewal of the license.

On July 20 (today), the twenty-year term of K-Electric’s power distribution license expires. The electric utility made a request to the authority to extend its distribution license for an additional 20 years, or until July 20, 2043.

In its request to the NEPRA, K-Electric argued that it currently serves 3.4 million customers and that the license renewal is in the best interests of both the power business and customers. The power distribution infrastructure will receive a $7 billion investment, according to the statement.

The request for renewal was submitted in compliance with Section 20 of the NEPRA Act 1997 (as amended) and Regulation 5(2) of the NEPRA (Distribution) Regulations, 2022, as well as the approved CTBCM design and any subsequent Authority determinations.
