New T20 World Cup 2024 sees West Indies and USA in unique formation.
According to Men’s T20 World Cup, in the first round, twenty teams will divide into four groups of five, followed by a Super Eights phase. In 2024, instead of the first round followed by the Super 12, as in 2021 and 2022, the 20 participating teams will divide into four groups of five teams each.
The top two teams from each of the four groups advance to the Super Eight round, where they will divide into two groups of four. The top two teams from each of the two Super Eights groups advance to the semi-finals, which will get follow by the final.
The previous two T20 World Cups divided the first round into two groups of four teams, with teams qualifying for the tournament and teams finishing ninth to twelfth in the previous T20 World Cup.
The top two teams from each group were joined in the first round by the remaining eight teams who had already qualified for the Super 12 stage. So far, 12 teams have confirmed their attendance at the T20 World Cup in 2024.
The United States and the West Indies qualified automatically as tournament hosts. England, India, New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and the Netherlands have also qualified for the 2022 edition, finishing in the top eight.
Afghanistan and Bangladesh are the other two teams who have secured their places because they were the second and third best in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 New Format rankings on the cut-off date of November 14, 2022.
The remaining eight spots will determine by regional qualifiers. So England is the current T20 World Cup champion, having defeated Pakistan in the final on November 13 in Melbourne.
