“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” secures the third-highest opening weekend for any “Spider-Man” film. The Sony animated sequel garners positive reviews and benefits from strong word-of-mouth. It capitalizes on the goodwill generated by its predecessor, the 2018 Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
Compared to the first film, initial ticket sales experienced a significant boost. While the first movie introduced audiences to Miles Morales and the idea that “anyone can wear the mask,” it debuted with only $35.5 million. However, it gained lasting popularity and enjoyed a prolonged run in theaters, ultimately grossing $190 million in North America and $384 million worldwide.
Finally, “Across the Spider-Verse” achieves a successful international debut, earning $88.1 million from 59 territories, with China leading the way at $17.3 million. The film’s global total reaches $208.6 million upon its release.
Industry expert David A. Gross describes the animated sequel’s opening as exceptionally strong, attributing its success to the original visual style, unique storytelling, and the appeal of the beloved superhero featured in “Spider-Verse.”
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, the PG-rated film had a production budget of $100 million.
