UN chief urged Pakistan to follow due process against PM Imran Khan.
Farhan Haq, a deputy spokesman for Guterres, said, “The UN chief of staff takes note of the ongoing protests that have erupted following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad, and he calls on all parties to refrain from violence.”
During a regular press briefing, Haq said Guterres “stresses the need to respect the right to peaceful assembly.” The Secretary-General implores the authorities to uphold the rule of law and due process in the legal actions taken against the former prime minister.
Imran Khan was detained on Saturday after being given a three year prison term by local court for concealing financial holdings.
The United States has stated that it is unnecessary to respond to Imran Khan’s arrest. The cases against PTI Chairman Imran Khan were deemed an internal affair of Pakistan by the US.
The State Department responded to a query by saying, “The cases against Imran Khan and other politicians in Pakistan are an internal affair.
“As we do everywhere else, we urge Pakistan to respect democratic norms and the rule of law,” the department declared.
Imran Khan assertions that the US overthrew his administration have repeatedly been dismissed by the US State Department as “baseless”.
