Storm Ophelia Increases Flood Risk on US East Coast

Cyclone Ophelia affects US East Coast with heavy rain and strong wind.

The National Hurricane Centre (NOAA) stated in its most recent alert that Ophelia was forecast to progressively diminish as it churned north-northeast, but that heavy rains still posed a threat to produce flood throughout a significant portion of the Mid-Atlantic into southern New England.

In places affected by Ophelia, one to three inches of rain could fall. According to local media, hundreds of New Jersey residents were without power as of Sunday morning, and some areas saw at least 4 inches of rain.

One to two feet of “inundation above ground level” was anticipated by the National Weather Service in New York for waterfront Suffolk County districts of Long Island.

Forecasters said a new storm has formed in the Atlantic as Ophelia winds decreased from hurricane-force on Saturday to about 25 mph (35 km/h) on Sunday. The Cabo Verde islands, which are close to Africa’s west coast, are located around 1,175 miles (1890 kilometers) to the west of tropical storm Philippe.

According to the hurricane center, Ophelia flood was south of Washington on Sunday morning and was forecast to keep moving northeast before turning east and further weakening over the following two days.

Numerous areas in New Jersey, including Sea Isle City and Brielle, experienced coastal flooding, according to the National Weather Service. The state still has thousands of residents without electricity. In coastal Delaware, there were additional reports of flooding and traffic closures.
