The world’s first pig kidney transplant patient has been discharged from the hospital in the US. A 62-year-old man was sent home 2 weeks after the first-of-its-kind surgery.
According to the British media (BBC), an elderly patient was sent home from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) on Wednesday. The surgery is also important because past attempts to transplant genetically modified kidneys into pigs have failed.

Scientists say that the successful transplantation of a pig kidney into a human is no less than a historical milestone in the field of transplantation. The US State General Hospital (MGH) announced the discharge of a 62-year-old patient through a press conference.
After the successful surgery at Harvard Medical School’s largest hospital (MGH) in the American city of Boston, the number of patients willing to transplant a pig kidney began to increase. The hospital says patient Rick Slayman is from Massachusetts.
The hospital administration said that the 62-year-old patient was in the last stage of kidney disease and was in dire need of a transplant. Doctors have successfully implanted a genetically modified pig kidney for which a long surgery lasting 4 hours was completed with tireless efforts on March 16.
The administration says that the transplanted kidney of Rick Slayman is working well and he no longer needs dialysis. The patient says that the moment of being discharged from the hospital and going home is one of the happiest moments of my life.
