Netflix Orders Sequel to Hit Norwegian Movie ‘Troll’

Netflix: Troll sequel confirmed; thrilling Norwegian action-adventure.

Uthaug, who is well known for his work on Tomb Raider, returns for the sequel, Troll 2, along with writer Espen Aukan, producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud, and the team at Motion Blur, the Oslo-based studio responsible for famous films including Cadaver, Amundsen, and The 12th Man.

Roar Uthaug, who was responsible for the first thriller film to be produced in Norway, The Wave, helmed the follow-up, according to Variety.

The original Troll movie explores what happens after an explosion awakens an old troll in the Norwegian mountains. The story follows a valiant paleontologist who sets out to stop the destructive troll’s onslaught. Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Pettersen, and Gard B. Eidsvold made up the ensemble cast.

Troll, which made its global Netflix debut in 2022, quickly rose to the top as the most-watched non-English film of all time, with an astounding 103 million views in its first 91 days, according to Netflix.

The magnificent production also earned a place in the Top 10 in 93 other nations and held the top spot in Norway, the US, and the UK.

In expressing his happiness, Roar Uthaug said, “Making Troll was a lifelong dream come true, and the reception our Norwegian movie has received around the world has been unbelievable.”

Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud expressed their excitement for the new film, reaffirming that Troll 2 will again center on a figure from a Norwegian fairy tale and continue to use an entirely Norwegian creative team for both acting and production. The second installment’s filming is expected to start in 2024.

Netflix’s selection of original Norwegian programming keeps growing, and now includes well-known shows like Salmon Island (working title), created by Anne Bjrnstad and Eilif Skodvin, who also created the well-liked crime comedy Lilyhammer, as well as Royalteen by Per-Olav Srensen, Ragnarok, War Sailor, and Royalteen: Princess Margrethe.
