Qazi Abdul Rehman, Who Named the City of Islamabad, was Honored

CDA finally acknowledges Qazi Abdur Rehman Amritsari family 63 years.

This is the person who proposed the name “Islamabad” for the eventual capital of Pakistan. Qazi Abdul Rehman was born in Amritsar in 1908 and migrated to Pakistan with his family. Settling in Arifwala in Islamabad, Pakistan.

When President Ayub Khan planned to replace Karachi as the new federal capital. A panel was formed, and the site chosen near Rawalpindi was approved.

Late Majeed Nizami, editor of Mahnama Qandeel Lahore, asked common people for suggestions for the name of the new capital. The federal government headed by President Ayub considered several names before settling on Qazi Abdul Rehman in February 1960.

Nizami made several attempts to arrange a meeting with President Ayub to give cash reward to Qazi Abdul Rehman, but no meeting could be held. Consequently, Nizami personally paid the money to Qazi Abdul Rahman.

The Federal Capital Commission then responded to Qazi’s request saying that his name was already registered for the plot in the future capital of Islamabad. Qazi had to wait 30 years to fulfill his promise to President Ayub, but he died in 1990.

Now, 63 years later, the CDA has chosen to maintain its association with Qazi’s family and give them a plot in the capital, Islamabad.
