Russia’s lower house bans gender reassignment surgery in latest blow.
The Russian parliament, or lower house, has passed a new law banning gender reassignment surgery in the country.
It now needs approval from the upper house and President Vladimir Putin, a move generally seen as a formality.
Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that this bill will protect our citizens and our children.
Mr Willowden similarly described sex-affirmation surgery as a path to the nation’s decline in a telegraphed message on Friday.
He said during the debate on Friday that we are the only European country that opposes states, what is happening in Europe and does everything to protect families and traditional values. It needs to be understood that if we don’t adopt the law, if we don’t ban gender assignment, there will be no future.
On Friday, during the final reading of the bill, new amendments were made to prevent transgender people from adopting children and to void unions where one partner had reassigned gender.
LGBT rights organizations warned that the law would seriously affect the health of those who were denied access to care.
