PPP candidate Murtaza Wahab win Karachi mayoral elections on Thursday.
Murtaza Wahab, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate, beat Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman, Jamat-e-Islami (JI) candidate, to win the mayoral elections in Karachi.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) held today’s elections at the Arts Council of Pakistan for the positions of mayor and deputy mayor of the port city of Karachi.
Naeem Ur Rehman received 160 votes, compared to Wahab’s 173 votes.
Wahab previously stated in a tweet upon his nomination as a candidate for mayor, “I am a Karachiite – the city is in my blood & nothing would be of greater honour for me than to strive for the welfare of our magnificent city.
The PPP leader promised to carry out his obligations to the best of his ability and “take the entire city forward, working with all stakeholders, political and administrative.”
Between 2021 to his departure in September of last year, Wahab was the administrator of Karachi.
His resignation followed the Sindh High Court‘s ruling that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation could not temporarily collect Municipal Utility Charges and Taxes (MUCT) through K-Electric bills.
He was CM Sindh’s Special Assistant at the time.
Salman Abdullah Murad and Saifuddin are the PPP and JI’s respective candidates for deputy mayor.
Former president Asif Ali Zardari congratulated all of Sindh’s mayors and deputy mayors in a tweet.
Zardari was quoted by the PPP’s media unit as saying that “the success of elected local representatives is the result of workers’ hard work.”
