Mazari backs Ashraf for PCB Chairman; Ashraf has previously led.
The nomination of the PCB chairman has begun a debate around the top-level appointment in the wake of a statement by the minister for interprovincial coordination, Ehsan Mazari.
The current chairman of the board management committee, Najam Sethi, has received support for the position from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
When we formed this administration, we agreed that the party in charge of the pertinent ministries would appoint its personnel to positions in the departments reporting to the ministries, according to Mazari.
It won’t be simple for the PPP to get their candidate “appointed” as PCB chairman, though.
The election of the chairman is spelt out in great detail in the PCB Constitution.
The PCB Constitution specifies in paragraph 6 that the board chairman will be chosen by the board of governors in accordance with paragraph 7 for a three-year term.
As long as a person total time serving as Chairman does not exceed a total of six years, the Chairman is eligible for re-election for one further three-year term.
Board OF Governors:
A special meeting of the Board of Governors shall be called to elect the Chairman from among the members of the Board of Governors, by a majority of the total voting membership of the Board of Governors, as stated in paragraph 7 of the PCB constitution, which also highlights the PCB chairman election procedure.
Four representatives of regional associations, four members of the service sector, and two members proposed by PCB patron in chief. The prime minister, make up the board of governors.
The PCB BoG has designated the IPC ministry delegate as a “ex-officio member” without voting privileges.
The PCB constitution is clear on how the chairman of the PCB will be chosen and who can suggest candidates to the BoG for the position.
If PPP is set on having their man in this case, Ashraf they will need to persuade PM Shahbaz to name him as Patron PCB representative. They have no other option.
