Lower Dir dowry demands 5 tolas of gold, a challenge to rising prices.
PESHAWAR: There is a long-standing practice known as dowry, whereby the bride’s family presents furniture, jewelry, money, and other material goods to the groom upon their marriage.
A jirga, or council of tribal elders, in Pakistan’s Lower Dir province set a tola of 11.7 grams of gold as dowry to help children from poor families marry, according to villagers.
A tola, or 44 troy ounces, is the most commonly used unit of measurement for precious metals in Pakistan. At present, the price of one tola of gold is Rs 215,800.
The Jirga warned the villagers that a fine of Rs 10 lakh would be imposed if they did not follow the decision.

Dowry is one of the big burdens of our society. It has become a scourge for today’s time. The difference in our economic status has further increased it. In this regard, the law enforced by the government for dowry should be followed by every poor rich person who violates it and severe punishment should be given so that this scourge can be removed from our society and every human being can protect his daughter, He can leave his sister by giving dowry according to her status.
