IMF declined the request made by Imran Khan to audit Feb 8 election.
According to a statement released on Friday, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has turned down Imran Khan request to have the results of the election on February 8th audited.
The IMF maintains that its mission largely focuses on economic challenges and views Pakistan’s political situation as an internal matter.
IMF official Esther Perez in Pakistan responded to Imran Khan’s letter by restating that the agency does not comment on regional or political matters.
The statement emphasized that the IMF’s engagement with Pakistan is focused on financial stability, sustainable and inclusive growth, and supporting the implementation of strong policies. It underlined that the IMF received PTI’s letter about Pakistan’s loan program.
On February 28, the PTI, led by former prime minister Imran Khan, wrote to the IMF outlining its stance and asking for an examination of thirty percent of the nation’s general election seats. The IMF did, however, make it plain that it does not offer commentary on events in domestic politics.
“The IMF, as an international institution with a narrow mandate on economic issues, does not comment on domestic political developments,” an IMF spokesperson said in response to Imran Khan’s letter.
“The organization expressed readiness to collaborate with the next administration on conducting the second review of the current Stand-by Arrangement and providing assistance in developing a new medium-term economic plan upon request.”
In its letter to the IMF, the PTI made it clear that they were not looking to conduct an investigation but rather asked the institution to take into consideration supporting an audit of the elections, in line with suggestions made by a number of groups, including FAFEN.
