On November 9, the ECP will consider the matter of Karachi LG Polls.
Sikandar Sultan Raja, the chief election commissioner, presided over a meeting when this Karachi LG polls decision was made. Along with the other commission members, ECP Secretary Omar Hamid Khan, Special Secretary Zafar Iqbal Hussain, and others attended the meeting.
The report by the Sindh government on holding local body elections in Karachi was explained to the guests. The provincial government responded in writing, stating that the absence of the necessary police force in Sindh prevents the holding of the LG elections.
It was also mentioned that more police officers had been dispatched to Islamabad at the request of the interior ministry. The report also stated that police officers are unable to leave flood-affected areas. Local governments cannot currently operate in peace, the report added.
The Karachi police department estimates that 37,000 police officers will be needed for security tasks during the LG elections. According to the provincial administration, 17,000 police officers were unable to evacuate the flood-affected areas, while the interior ministry requested that 5,000 Sindh police officers be relocated to Islamabad.
It is important to note that the local government (LG) elections in Karachi that were scheduled for October 23 have been postponed by the ECP. The second phase of the Sindh LG elections had been postponed by ECP three times prior.
