LHC Rejects Elahi’s Plea to Change Donkey Cart as Electoral Symbol

LHC rejects Elahi’s plea to change symbol from donkey cart to peacock.

Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), filed a petition with the Lahore High Court (LHC) to replace his electoral symbol of a “donkey cart” with a “peacock” for the upcoming general elections on February 8. The petition was rejected.

The high court bench, presided over by Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan, upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s ruling that had granted him the election symbol.

In an effort to challenge the assigned electoral symbol for the upcoming elections in Punjab, the former chief minister sought the LHC. He petitioned the court to designate him the title of “peacock” for the election.

The ECP’s choice to give Pervaiz Elahi the “donkey cart” symbols would stand, the court decided.

The Supreme Court granted permission to Elahi to participate in the elections last week. PTI candidates Umer Aslam, Major (retd) Tahir Sadiq, and Elahi filed appeals against returning officers’ rulings to reject their nomination papers from different constituencies, and it granted their appeals.

Authorities granted Elahi permission to contest the general election for the PP-32 seat in the Gujarat district.
