SUGA Becomes 3rd BTS Member to Begin Military Service

BTS SUGA fulfill South Korea mandatory military service, national duty

Earlier this year, the K-pop sensation BTS rapper, singer, and composer completed his first solo tour before enlisting in the military. “We would like to inform our fans that SUGA has initiated the military enlistment process by applying for the termination of his enlistment postponement,” his management company, Big Hit Music, stated in a statement.

“Until SUGA completes his military service and returns home safely, we humbly beg for your continuing love and support for him. Our business will make every attempt to help our talent, the agency stressed.

All men in South Korea between the ages of 18 and 28 are required by law to serve 18 to 21 months in the military as part of a conscription system designed to prevent aggression from rival North Korea.

Athletes, classical and traditional musicians, and ballet and other dancers are all given specific exemptions under the law if they have won top honors in competitions and are considered to have increased national status. However, such privileges are not available to K-pop celebrities or actors.

After South Korea National Assembly altered its Military military Act in 2020, allowing K-pop stars to postpone their recruitment until age 30, BTS, who were scheduled to start their military, delayed their enlisting until that age.

After a long public argument about whether to provide BTS members special exemptions from their obligation to serve in the military, the group’s management agency finally declared in October 2022 that all seven members will carry out their obligations. BTS’s oldest member, Jin, renounced his appeal to postpone his conscription and enrolled in the military in December 2022 at the age of 30. J-Hope did the same in April.

South Korean boy band

For those who don’t know, BTS is a well-known boy band from South Korea. Seven people make up the group: Jungkook, RM, J-hope, Jimin, Jin, V, and SUGA . The boy band was established in 2010 and is under BIG HIT Entertainment’s management.

BTS was founded more than 10 years ago, and since then, the group has achieved widespread success, broken records, and elevated K-Pop to new heights.

2013 saw BTS make their debut with the album 2 Cool 4 Skool. The band entered the international music market in 2017. BTS has sold more than 30 million albums as of 2022, making them the best-selling artist in South Korean history, according to the Circle Chart.
