Taliban bans Afghan political parties, citing Islamic law violation.
Day after the Taliban marked the second anniversary of their return to power in Afghanistan following a protracted conflict, the ban was announced on Wednesday.
At a news conference in Kabul, Taliban Minister of Justice Abdul Hakim Sharaee made the announcement, stating that “Sharia” did not provide any justification for political parties to function in the nation.
Up until the Taliban retook power of Kabul two years ago, the Ministry of Justice had records for over 70 major and minor political organizations.
Since then, the Taliban have been under fire from foreign leaders for restricting freedom of organization, assembly, and expression as well as for outlawing girls’ education.
In addition to prohibiting most Afghan women from working and visiting marketplaces and parks, they have also prevented girls from attending schools past the sixth grade.
