In a statement, South Australian police said its officers were first alerted to the attack at 13:30 local time on Thursday.

“Sadly, the body of a teenage boy has been recovered from the water,” police said in a statement.

Police indicated officers were submitting a report to the coroner but did not release the youth’s age.

Ethel Beach is a 400m long sandy surf beach popular with surfers and tourists with waves averaging 1.5m.

Local resident Marty Gowdy, who has been surfing in the area for decades, told media he estimated the victim could be “30 to 40 meters from shore”.

He said there had always been sharks in the area – but there seemed to be a lot more now.
