$8 verification badge raise concern about impersonation; badge crucial
In the midst of the Twitter $8 verification official badge frenzy, many celebrities and government figures are concerned about impersonations on the platform. They believe that by purchasing a verification badge for a small fee, almost anyone can take their name and create a verified account under it.
In response to the uproar, Twitter stated that it will not change its plan of offering the verification badge for $8; however, in order to prevent impersonation, the platform will introduce a ‘official badges’ for high-profile accounts to distinguish them from those verified through the $8 payment.
New Feature
While discussing the new feature, Twitter’s director of product management, Esther Crawford, stated that fake government accounts are a major issue for Twitter. The official badge’s will be able to address this issue, and unlike the $8 verification badges, it will not be available for purchase.
Crawford claims that the badge will be available to governments, large media outlets, businesses, business associates, and other public figures.
Up until now, people who signed up for a Twitter blue subscription automatically received the $8 verification checks. Twitter’s “official badges” have not yet been released, but they will be distributed to all high-profile accounts in the coming years.
