While the United States lacks intelligence or evidence of Iran direct involvement in Hamas’ attacks in Israel, the White House earlier on Monday asserted Iran’s implication.
Asked what his message for Iran was, General Charles Q. Brown, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated, “Do not become involved.”
Israeli shelling in Lebanon on Monday resulted in the deaths of at least three Hezbollah fighters, and Israel reported the killing of one of its officers in a prior cross-border raid claimed by Palestinians in Lebanon.
The cross-border violence extending to the Israeli-Lebanese border further north significantly prolonged the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza.
Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah engaged in a devastating month-long conflict in 2006.
“We want to convey a very clear message. In his first public remarks since being appointed to the position last month, Brown told a small group of reporters flying with him to Brussels, “We do not want this to widen, and the aim is for Iran to understand that message loud and clear.
