World Boxing Champion Dingaan Thobela found Dead

Boxing champion Dingaan Thobela found dead on Monday due to ill health.

A family member told AFP that Dingaan Thobela, a former world boxing champion, was discovered dead in Johannesburg on Monday at the age of 57 after experiencing health issues.

A representative, who asked to remain anonymous, stated, “We came to his flat, gained entry, and discovered he had died when mobile phone calls to him went unanswered.”

Known as the “Rose of Soweto,” he began boxing professionally in 1990 and competed for 16 years, winning three world titles in two different weight classes.

Thobela took home the lightweight titles from the World Boxing Organization in 1990, the lightweight title from the World Boxing Association three years later, and the super-middleweight title from the World Boxing Council in 2000.

Born in Chiawelo, he rose to fame in the 1990s after winning the WBO lightweight title in Brownsville, Texas, USA, via a victory against Mexican Mauricio Aceves.

He defeated American Tony Lopez in a brutal fight at Sun City in the North West in 1993 to win the WBA lightweight title.

Thobela won the World Boxing Council super middleweight championship in September 2000. In 2006, he announced his retirement from professional boxing after 40 wins, 14 losses, and 2 draws.
