Far-right command order removal of Palestinian flags to “provocation.”
Itamar Ben-Gvir, the newly appointed far-right National Security Minister of Israel, claimed on Sunday that he had given lawful orders to remove Palestinian flag from public areas.
Although cops and troops are permitted to take down Palestinian flags whenever they perceive they represent a threat to social stability, Israeli law does not explicitly prohibit them.
The directive from Ben-Gvir, who leads an extreme nationalist party in Benjamin Netanyahu’s new cabinet and serves as the minister in charge of the police force has seemed to take a strict stance in calling for their deportation.
It coincides with the release last week of a long-serving Palestinian inmate who was found to be guilty of kidnapping and killing an Israeli soldier in 1983 and who raised a Palestinian flag while enjoying a hero’s welcome in his village in northern Israel.
Ben-Gvir asserted that:
sponsoring terrorism by waving the Palestinian flag was immoral.
Ben-Gvir stipulated that “It is unacceptable that law-abding citizens wave terrorist flags, instigate and embrace terrorism, thus I authorized the eradication of flags sponsoring terrorism from the public area and to cease the propaganda against Israel,”
The preponderance of the Arab population of Israel, which makes up about 5% of the total, is sprung from Palestinians who lingered in the freshly created pursuant to section its war for independence in 1948.
While a majority of them affiliate with or belong to the Palestinians, they have argued in the past about how to reconcile their Israeli citizenship with their Palestinian ancestry in Israel’s electoral parties.
