The all-format captain Babar Azam is not a natural opener, as per Azharuddin, and reducing his batting order will boost his effectiveness in T20 cricket.
The former cricketer continued, “If there is a form issue, he finds it tough to get runs; there is no problem if he bats at lesser numbers as well.”
Babar’s success at the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia last year, where he hit 124 runs in seven innings, was also addressed by the former skipper.
As per Azharuddin, the 28-year-old batter was unable to exhibit his customary form in the major competition because of the pressure of carrying the leadership weight.
Since the Asia Cup 2022, Babar’s opening position in T20 cricket has been under scrutiny, and many veteran cricketers have warned against it.
It is important to note that his leadership skills have come under scrutiny after the 1-2 loss to New Zealand in the ODI series.
The bulk of previous cricket players, however, have sided with Babar Azam and encouraged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) administration to extend his playing time.
