PPP Beats PML-N to Win AJK by-Election

Azad Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly LA-15 by-election won by PPP.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate, Sardar Zia Qamar, received 25,755 votes to win the by-election in the Bagh district of Azad Kashmir, according to the inconclusive results.

Pakistan Muslim League-N candidate, however, took home the top prize. Second place with 20485 votes went to Mushtaq Ahmad Minhas.

After Colonel (retd) Zameer Khan, a representative for the Tehreek-e-Insaf, which gained a historic win in the general elections of 2021, was defeated, the seat for the LA-15 constituency became vacant due to the ruling of former Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas at the Supreme Court.

More than 2500 police officers and 500 FC members were sent in as a swift response to ensure the transparency of the election. At a number of locations under police control, there were clashes between PPP and Muslim League-N employees.

In response to allegations that the presiding officer at polling station number 182 was rigged, an alternate presiding officer was selected. Polls were open from 8 am to 5 pm without a break. Counting a total of 52,061, of which 412 votes were legitimate. There were more than 50% of participants that were rejected.

With 59 polling places for men, 57 for women, and 73 combined polling places. The constituency had 189 polling places set up for the by-election.
