Gladiators’ choice to bowl first proved wrong
After winning the toss, Gladiators elected to bowl first, but their move proved ill-advised as Sultans immediately went on the attack. Mohammad Rizwan scored 69 runs off 47 balls. Similarly, teammate Johnson Charles scored 53 runs off just 29 balls. Meanwhile, Usman Khan also played a brilliant innings of 21 runs off 23 balls.
Role of Bowlers
Despite Mohammad Amir managing to take two wickets for the Gladiators, he conceded 40 runs in four overs. The Gladiators’ bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught of the Sultan’s batsmen. Muhammad Wasim Jr. and Abrar Ahmed managed to take a wicket each but the runs leaked, Wasim conceding 31 runs in three overs and Ahmed conceding 39 runs in four overs.
With the loss of four wickets, Sultans scored a robust 185, setting a tough target of 186 for the Gladiators.
In reply, Gladiators withstood Sultans’ aggressive bowling attack. Despite Umir Yousuf’s valiant effort of 37 off 25 balls, the rest of the Gladiators’ batting line-up struggled to cope.
Sultans bowlers Osama Mir and David Willey wreaked havoc by taking three wickets each for just 22 runs. Abbas Afridi also made an important contribution, taking two wickets for just 14 runs in three overs.
Under pressure, the Gladiators’ batting order crumbled quickly, scoring just 106 runs and being bowled out in the fifteenth over.
Points for Teams
After this win, Sultans have fourteen points, thirteen points ahead of second placed Peshawar Zalmi. With 11 points, Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators are at the third and fourth positions respectively.
Sultans also boast the highest net run rate at 1.150, while second placed Zalmi has a net run rate of 0.147. Sultans will now face Peshawar Zalmi in Qualifier 1 round on Thursday.
