Discovered 49 Galaxies in just 3 hours using MeerKAT Telescope

Discovered 49 galaxies with a MeerKAT radio telescope in just 3 hours.

Using South Africa’s Meerkat radio telescope, a multinational team of scientists discovered 49 galaxies in less than three hours.

According to foreign news sources, these incredible results have been made by the Inter-University Institute of Data-Intensive Astronomy.

At first, scientists were looking for star-forming gas in one galaxy while examining the data to discover other galaxies, said team leader Marcin Glowecki, an expert at the International Center for Radio Astronomy Research.

According to him, a total of 49 galaxies have been discovered, which is proof of how useful a tool like Meerkat can be for detecting stars and galaxies.

Marcin Glowacki, chief of research at the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Western Australia, describes the 49 new galaxies as “gold nuggets” for astronomers. Their discovery is arguably as lucky as the first gold nuggets discovered at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California, which sparked the California Gold Rush in 1848.

“I didn’t expect to find so many galaxies in such a short time, but different techniques were used to find the galaxies, and then we were able to find all those galaxies and show the amount of gas in them,” said Marcin Glowecki. I succeeded.
