California Mountain Lion Attack Leaves one Person Dead

A 21-year-old boy was killed by a mountain lion attack in California.

A 21-year-old boy was killed and his younger brother seriously injured after a mountain lion attack him in El Dorado County, California.

The incident in a remote area of the forest near Georgetown was the first fatal attack by a mountain lion on a human in California in nearly 20 years, according to data collected by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The two young brothers were out hunting for deer antlers when they were attacked by a lion in the early afternoon.

According to a news release from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, the younger brother alerted emergency services that he was seriously injured and separated from his brother in the attack. According to media reports, he was taken to hospital and is expected to survive.

As deputies began searching for the older brother, they saw a mountain lion sitting on the ground near the individual. Officers fired shots to scare off the animal so they could help but found the 21-year-old already dead, the release said.

The lion was killed

Wildlife officers later located the mountain lion and killed it near the attack site, the department said. A forensic lab has found its remains to obtain DNA and other details about the animal.

Last month, a group of cyclists were attacked by a cougar while riding through a trial in Washington state. A woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
