Aftab Sultan steps down as head of NAB

Aftab Sultan resigned as NAB head citing ‘personal reason’ on Tuesday.

Sultan’s resignation was officially announced by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in a brief statement. The Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was informed of Mr. Aftab Sultan’s resignation as Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau(NAB), citing personal reasons.

According to the statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif “lauded Sultan’s honesty and uprightness” and “valued the services” Sultan provided.

“The Prime Minister regretfully accepted Mr. Sultan’s resignation at his demand.

Fawad Chaudhry made a significant step in the fall of the fascist system.

Fawad Chaudhry, senior vice chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), responded to the incident by stating that Sultan’s departure “is a huge step towards the collapse of a fascist system.”

The federal cabinet appointed the former director general of the Intelligence Bureau to lead the NAB in July of last year.

Sultan, a retired police officer with a solid reputation for integrity, previously held the positions of IGP for Punjab and commander of the National Police Academy.

Since Sultan is a trustworthy official, PML-N supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif selected Sultan as the head of the Intelligence Bureau in 2013.

After working as the IB’s director since June 7, 2013, he retired on April 3, 2018.

Sultan was the one who had declined to assist him in the 2002 referendum because he was a top police officer stationed in Sargodha during the Musharraf administration. Sultan received a promotion to the position of officer on special duty in exchange.

He is the only officer who served with two separate governments, having also been nominated by former PPP PM Yousuf Raza Gilani. Sultan has worked for past leaders Raja Pervez Ashraf and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in addition to Sharif and Gilani.

Aftab Sultan received his law degree from Punjab University and went on to complete an LLM at Cambridge University as well as an MSc in jurisprudence/legal studies at the University of Edinburgh.
