After Punjab, KP Election on Oct 8: ECP

ISLAMABAD: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly general election was announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) late on Wednesday night as being held on October 8.

The governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chose the 8 of October 2023 as the KP election date, and the ECP hereby notifies that date as the polling date for the general election to the KP Assembly.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly was dissolved on January 18, 2023. And the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s order from March 1, 2023, passed in a suo motu case.

The KP governor initially suggested May 28 for the election date, but later requested that the ECP hold the elections on October 8 due to security reasons.

The announcement states that in accordance with Section 57(2) of the Elections Act of 2017. The election schedule for candidates seeking election to the KP legislature will be published as soon as possible.

The poll date for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly election was set in a letter from KP Governor Haji Ghulam Ali to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja. He also mentioned that the law and order situation in the province was getting worse.

He wrote that since the ECP had changed the date of the Punjab general elections to October 8, 2023, “it is also suggested that the same Oct 8, 2023. Be proposed/appointed as the election date for General Elections of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in the best public interest. As well as in the interest of the state.” When the ECP received the date from the KP Governor, it held its meeting to discuss the issue because the file was presented to it.
