Criticism of Electricity Bills, JI Leaders Booked

Peshawar: FIR charges JI leaders for rallies over electricity rates.

Advocate Khalid Gul, Zahid Shah, Tahir Zareen, Haji Qadeer and others are among those facing these charges on behalf of the JI leaders.

The FIR includes allegations of interference in official functions, blocking of roads, damage to government property and forced closure of businesses.

The incident followed a state-wide walkout on Saturday organized by hundreds of traders to protest against rising inflation, exorbitant electricity prices and the recent hike in the prices of fuel products.

Lawyers boycotted courtrooms as a result of the strike, which was initiated by Jamaat-e-Islami and several trade organizations and was supported by the legal community.

All major commercial and business centers remained closed during the strike in cities like Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar. Placards were put up at the abandoned markets criticizing the unjustified hike in electricity bills and taxes.

Also, JI organized a large women’s rally to protest against the Hosherba hike in electricity rates and demand immediate relief and removal of significant charges from bills. A protest took place on New MA Jinnah Road which was the biggest in the recent wave of electricity protests.
