According to reports, NEPRA will hear the request today, and the power rate hike will be for one month due to a fuel price adjustment for electricity utilized in January.

The CPPA filed a petition with the NEPRA, stating that hydroelectric facilities generated 11.12 percent of total power in January, coal-fired plants generated 16.51 percent, natural gas generated 12.45 percent, and nuclear plants generated 20.78 percent.

The increase will impose an additional cost of Rs 66 billion on power consumers, who are already paying exorbitant power bills.

Earlier, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) raised the electricity tariff by Rs5.63 per unit owing to the monthly fuel adjustment (MFA).

After concluding a hearing on the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) petition for a Rs5.63 per unit increase in electricity tariffs under the fuel monthly adjustment for December 2023, NEPRA made the decision.

The approval will impose an additional expense of Rs49 billion on power consumers. Consumers will pay an additional amount on their next month’s electricity bills.

It is worth noting that, at the request of the caretaker administration, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) allowed the pricing increase in order to keep the country’s electricity tariff uniform.
