Imran Khan Collected Rs4.8bn For Flood Victims

PTI open bank account to collect fund: Bank of Punjab, Bank of Khyber.

Khan’s live telethons got pledges totaling Rs15 billion, of which Rs4.6 billion has been received thus far, according to senator Dr. Sania Nishtar. Nishtar was also the former Special Assistant of the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and was given the responsibility by the former prime minister Imran Khan to oversee the collection and distribution of funds for flood victims of the devastating rains and floods in Pakistan.

Rival politicians and social media users, however, have charged Nishtar and Khan’s political party with inflating the sum of money it has so far raised.

The assertion made by Nishtar is true. To date, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has amassed Rs4.8 billion.

Claim

It is alleged that late last year, Federal Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique tweeted that the PTI had been promised Rs13 billion through telethons.

He said, “How did the amount increase by two-thirds? As of right now, Rs4.3 billion has been collected, and it is in the bank accounts, according to Sania Nishtar. And where is the money located in the accounts?

At the time of writing, his tweet had more than 2,000 likes and over 1,000 retweets.

Another Twitter user at the same time charged Dr. Sania Nishtar with lying about the $4 billion in bank accounts.

The user stated, “The State Bank data shows only Rs50 million.”

Fact

According to documents provided to Geo Fact Check by Sania Nishtar, PTI has received Rs4.8 billion out of the Rs15 billion in commitments made during Imran Khan’s three live telethons last year.

The PTI set up three bank accounts—one in each of the Bank of Punjab, Bank of Khyber, and National Bank of Pakistan—to raise money, and Imran Khan is also soliciting donations for flood victims through the Insaf Relief Foundation in the United States.

According to bank records, the Bank of Punjab has so far collected Rs3.4 billion.

The PTI has received Rs1.2 billion from the Bank of Khyber and Rs2.7 million so far from the National Bank of Pakistan.

$650,000 has been donated to the Insaf Relief Foundation (Rs148.85 million).

On the condition of anonymity, government representatives with knowledge of the situation also confirmed the sum to Geo Fact Check.
