Karachi to Get Multiple Parks for Differently-Abled

Sindh government reserve Karachi parks for differently-abled creation.

On Thursday, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) announced its plan to establish four parks across the city, specifically tailored to meet the needs of differently-abled individuals. This initiative is being made possible through generous support from both the Sindh government and the Centre for Autism Rehabilitation Training (CARTS).

The KMC sought to transfer control of these parks to the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD) to transform them into recreational areas. During a meeting convened at the DEPD office, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab expressed, “We are fully dedicated to utilizing KMC resources to empower individuals with disabilities.”

The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Secretary of DEPD, Municipal Commissioner of KMC Syed Afzal Zaidi, and the Director General of Parks at KMC.

During the meeting, the Secretary of DEPD earnestly requested the mayor to allocate space within KMC parks for activities catering to people with disabilities. This stressed the pressing need for facilities in Karachi that can support the unique requirements of the growing disabled community.

Consequently, funds have been allocated under the Annual Development Program (ADP) to renovate four parks with specialized facilities for people with disabilities in the current fiscal year. The mentioned parks include Kashmir Road Park, Malir Saudia Park, and Landhi Imran Shaheed Park.

Wahab emphasized that Kashmir Road Park would serve as a pioneering model park designed exclusively for individuals with disabilities. During on-site visits to KMC Parks, he further directed the Director General of Parks to collaborate closely with the Secretary of DEPD.
