Supreme Court allows Pervaiz Elahi to Contest General Elections

SC allowed PTI President Pervaiz Elahi to contest upcoming elections.

Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, the president of the PTI and a former chief minister of Punjab, was granted permission by the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday to contest in the upcoming elections.

Judge Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, and Justice Athar Minallah made up the three-judge bench that heard the former chief minister of Punjab’s appeal against the rejection of his nomination papers.

Pervaiz Elahi was able to enter the race from PP-32 in Gujrat after the supreme court overturned the rulings of the high court and the race Tribunal.

Pervaiz Elahi, who is being held at the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, has filed nomination papers for four constituencies in the Punjab Assembly (PP-23, PP-34, PP-32, and PP-42) and three National Assembly constituencies (NA-59, NA-64, and NA-69). His documents were turned down by several returning officers (ROs).

An election tribunal that heard his challenge to the ROs’ judgment upheld their ruling. The Lahore High Court (LHC), which Pervaiz Elahi then petitioned, affirmed the tribunal’s decision on January 13.

A further appeal against the LHC ruling was filed by the PTI leader with the Supreme Court, in which the election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the electoral tribunal were named as defendants.
