The Former President of Chile Died in a Helicopter Crash

Chile former president Sebastian Pinera has died in a helicopter crash, prompting nationwide mourning as Latin American leaders offer condolences.

According to a foreign news agency, the helicopter carrying 74-year-old Sebastian Pinera and three other people crashed into a lake in southern Chile.

 

According to sources, the former president himself was the pilot, officials did not confirm where the helicopter was going.

After rescuers arrived, the former president was confirmed dead, but the other three passengers survived.

Sebastian Pinera often spent summers near the beautiful lakes in the south of Chile and often flew his own helicopter.

Chilean President Gabriel Borque declared three days of national mourning across the country as plans began on Friday to bury the leader, who served two terms between 2010 and 2022, with full state honors.

According to the interior minister, the former President’s body was discovered in a lake near the town of Lago Rinco.

Sebastian Pinera is most known for spearheading the spectacular rescue of 33 miners in 2010, which received international media attention and was incorporated into the 2014 film The 33.
