Calls to Postpone the General Elections are Rejected by ECP

Islamabad: ECP dismisses proposal to postpone general elections 2024.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani Election Commission (ECP) has rejected a postpone the country’s general elections, highlighting that the February 8 polling date was decided upon in consultation with the country’s president.

The ECP communicated that it would not be wise to delay the general elections at this time in a letter to the Senate’s Joint Secretary (Legislation). Furthermore, the upper chamber of parliament’s resolution is not yet able to be put into effect.

The caretaker administration has already received instructions from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to guarantee the upholding of law and order throughout the election process. As part of this, the security framework will be strengthened to foster an atmosphere that will support the peaceful and legitimate holding of the general elections in 2024.

The letter noted that the ECP has pledged before the Supreme Court to conduct the general elections on February 8, 2024.

It’s also important to remember that prior general elections as well as local government elections have happened in the winter.

Recall that Independent Senator Dilawar Khan sent a letter to the Senate Chairman expressing worry over the ECP’s lack of action on his resolution, which called for a postponement of the elections and was passed on January 5. With 14 senatorial votes in favor, the proposal was approved by the majority.
