April Fool’s Day is believed to have originated when Pope Gregory XIII proclaimed the Gregorian calendar and announced that the new calendar would begin on January 1.

In the old calendar, the new year started around April 1. Thus, some people celebrate the New Year from the last week of March to the 1st of April.

Around this time, the tradition of April Fool’s Day developed, and people began to make fun of people who continued to use the old calendar.

History

It is well known that many historians associate April Fools’ Day with “festivals such as Hilaria,” which means “joyful” in Latin. In ancient Rome, individuals would dress up in disguises, play games, and make fun of one another on this day.
