Why is National Mathematics Day Celebrated on December 22 Every Year?

December 22 was actually Ramanujan’s birthday, which was declared as National Mathematics Day by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2012.

Therefore, Mathematics Day is celebrated every year on 22nd December in the memory of mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

Born in 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu, India, Srinivasa Ramanujan is considered one of the greatest mathematicians in Indian history.

Srinivasa Ramanujan is recognized for his outstanding work in the fields of ‘Continued Fractions, Riemann Series, Elliptic Integrals, Hypergeometric Series and Functional Equations of the Zeta Function.

It should be noted that he had no special training in mathematics before working in these fields.

The National Mathematics Day is celebrated to highlight the achievements of Srinivasa Ramanujan.

And to emphasize the idea that formal and advanced academic training is not the only path to high achievement.

On this day, children in schools are encouraged to go beyond textbooks and engage in critical thinking and logical reasoning.
