Gladiators’ choice to bowl first proved wrong

After winning the toss, Gladiators elected to bowl first, but their move proved ill-advised as Sultans immediately went on the attack. Mohammad Rizwan scored 69 runs off 47 balls. Similarly, teammate Johnson Charles scored 53 runs off just 29 balls. Meanwhile, Usman Khan also played a brilliant innings of 21 runs off 23 balls.

Role of Bowlers

Despite Mohammad Amir managing to take two wickets for the Gladiators, he conceded 40 runs in four overs. The Gladiators’ bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught of the Sultan’s batsmen. Muhammad Wasim Jr. and Abrar Ahmed managed to take a wicket each but the runs leaked, Wasim conceding 31 runs in three overs and Ahmed conceding 39 runs in four overs.

With the loss of four wickets, Sultans scored a robust 185, setting a tough target of 186 for the Gladiators.

In reply, Gladiators withstood Sultans’ aggressive bowling attack. Despite Umir Yousuf’s valiant effort of 37 off 25 balls, the rest of the Gladiators’ batting line-up struggled to cope.

Sultans bowlers Osama Mir and David Willey wreaked havoc by taking three wickets each for just 22 runs. Abbas Afridi also made an important contribution, taking two wickets for just 14 runs in three overs.

Under pressure, the Gladiators’ batting order crumbled quickly, scoring just 106 runs and being bowled out in the fifteenth over.

Points for Teams

After this win, Sultans have fourteen points, thirteen points ahead of second placed Peshawar Zalmi. With 11 points, Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators are at the third and fourth positions respectively.

Sultans also boast the highest net run rate at 1.150, while second placed Zalmi has a net run rate of 0.147. Sultans will now face Peshawar Zalmi in Qualifier 1 round on Thursday.

As per a letter from the Punjab Home Department to the chief of prisons in Punjab, which Dawn.com was able to get, the decision was made due to security alerts that suggested possible threats from anti-state terrorist groups that were plotting targeted attacks on Adiala jail with the help of external opponents.

As a preventative action against these detected threats, the agency urged the jail chief to immediately suspend meetings, interviews, and public visits within Adiala Jail for a period of two weeks.

This order came after the police and the Rawalpindi Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) allegedly prevented an attempted attack on the jail, leading to the detention of three terrorist suspects.

Imran Khan, Parvez Elahi, and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, two prominent PTI leaders, are among those being held at Adiala jail.

PTI leaders, suach as Barrister Salman Safdar, expressed their annoyance at not being able to see Imran Khan because of the ban, blaming it on security considerations.

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the chairman of the PTI, denounced the general prohibition and emphasized that Imran’s family and attorneys were not informed beforehand. He emphasized the gravity of the situation by mentioning Imran Khan’s past murder attempts and voicing worries for his safety.

Joining the chorus of protest, National Assembly Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan emphasized how the limitation disobeyed court orders and reaffirmed the PTI’s demand that the prohibition be immediately reconsidered.
