Patients Suffer as The All Sindh Medical Worker Strike Continues

Medical staff strike in prolongs patient suffering; operating rooms.

The strike has left Karachi’s Civil Hospital, the main government hospital in the region, desolate and its operating rooms empty.

The hospital has amassed a mountain of trash as a result of the sanitation staff’s strike. Furthermore, the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), National Institute of Child Health (NICH), Lyari General Hospital, and other government run medical facilities have subpar cleanliness.

For the last several days, OPDs have been closed at all of Karachi’s major hospitals, forcing the city’s poorest patients and their families to seek care in pricey private clinics.

Similar circumstances exist in other cities, including Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Larkana, and Jacobabad, where hospital medical personnel is still on strike, causing people to rush to private hospitals, clinics, and medical facilities.

It should be mentioned that the Grand Health Alliance is now organizing demonstrations in support of the closure of the health risk allowance at all government hospitals in Sindh.

Young medical professionals including nurses, paramedics, and hygienists are holding demonstrations. The protesters have made up their minds to stay on strike till their demands are satisfied.

Shahid Iqbal, a nursing leader, said that all government medical personnel have been protesting for the past 25 days in Sindh and have not been carrying out any tasks besides responding to emergencies. Iqbal urged that a health risk allowance be given.

In the meanwhile, patients have called on the province’s government hospitals to treat patients and order the striking medical professionals to cease their strike.

New EV Charging Stations will be Installed at Motorways

The Government plans 5 new EV charging stations on Pakistan highways.

At the Bhera Service Area, the government has also installed an EV charging station. In order to accelerate EV normalisation throughout Pakistan, additional fuel stations along the highway network will also install EV charging stations.

According to the details, the locations include:

  1. Rashakai Service Area (Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway, M-1)
  2. Tandliyanwala Service Area (Lahore-Islamabad Motorway, M-3)
  3. Dandewal Service Area (Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad, Khanewal Motorway, M-4)
  4. Khanewal Service Area (Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad, Khanewal Motorway, M-4)
  5. Hazara Service Area (Hassanabdal-Havelian Expressway E-35)

In their analysis, LUMS researchers emphasised the prospects and obstacles of EV adoption, stating:

It is important to note that Pakistan is a party to the Paris Climate Agreement and has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030. Despite the state’s promotion of EVs, consumers are still hesitant about them because of their high price and the scarcity of charging stations, particularly in large cities.

Plug-in hybrid electric cars (PHEVs) are a mixture of gasoline and electric cars, so they really have a battery, an electric motor, a gasoline tank, and an combustion engine that is internal.

Many KP School teachers have not received salaries in Nearly Half Year

Thousands of unpaid teachers work in hundreds of double-shift schools.

Details indicate that over the past five months, the Elementary and Secondary Education Department of KP has not paid school teachers’ salaries at 1,443 double-shift schools located in 27 districts of the province. In order to enrol out-of-school children and relieve some of the strain on the province’s already overloaded public schools, the KP government established double-shift schools.

In March, almost 3,000 teachers were hired to work in these institutions. For these schools in settled districts, the province government had allotted Rs. 110 million, and for schools in merging districts, it had allotted Rs. 35 million. They begin by instructing pupils during the morning shift, and they continue with this during the evening shift as well. These double-shift schools have about 43,000 students enrolled. The future of these kids doesn’t seem promising because the teachers aren’t getting paid.

One of the unpaid instructors claimed that the majority of them simultaneously pursue their M Phil and PhD degrees concurrently with teaching. It is quite challenging to maintain the enthusiasm necessary to instruct the students without compensation.

Class teachers (CT), secondary school teachers (SST), secondary school subject specialists (SS), and primary school teachers (PST) were all engaged at a set monthly pay of Rs. 22,000, Rs. 25,000, Rs. 28,000, and Rs. 30,000, respectively. The salary for March, April, and May were paid out by the provincial government in May. The salary for June, July, August, September, and October have not yet been paid, nevertheless.

During the first week of September, a group of unpaid teachers met with Shahram Khan Tarakai, the KP Minister for Elementary and Secondary Education, who gave them the assurance that their salaries will be paid by the end of the month. The teachers have not yet received their pay, nevertheless.

Xi, Biden to Meet Face-to-Face Amid Superpower Tensions

Xi, Biden to Meet Face-to-Face Amid Superpower Tensions

President Biden to meet President Xi Jinping in person for first time.

The long-awaited face-to-face encounter will take place at a time when superpower ties are at their lowest point in decades. Prior to the annual Group of 20 (G20) meeting, which brings together the heads of the major established and emerging economies of the globe, the two will meet on Bali, an island in Indonesia.

Biden enters the summit riding high after Democrats won control of the Senate, a development that was welcomed by world leaders, and after Xi was granted an unprecedented third term in power last month.

I Am Stronger Than Before

“Although I am stronger than before, I don’t need that. I spent more time with Xi Jinping than any other world leader, therefore I am familiar with him.” Following the Senate vote results on Sunday, Biden spoke to media in Cambodia. “Where each of us stands is never calculated incorrectly.”

Floor For The Relationship with China

Prior to the G20, the US president is on a whirlwind tour that includes stops in Egypt for an international climate summit, an ASEAN summit, and Cambodia’s East Asia Summit. He hopes to establish a “floor for the relationship” with China and ensure that there are regulations governing competition between the two countries.

Biden recently stated that when he talks with Xi, he will not be making any fundamental compromises and that he wants both leaders to define their “red lines” and settle any points of contention.

Stabilization of Relation

The White House has stated that no joint statement is anticipated from the meeting, which is unlikely to result in any tangible outcomes. Nevertheless, it may contribute to the stabilization of relations amid rising tensions over issues ranging from Hong Kong and Taiwan to the South China Sea, coercive trade policies, and US technology restrictions.

Since Biden’s inauguration in January 2021, the two have spoken five times by phone or video. Their last in-person encounter took place under the Obama presidency. Particular tensions arose during US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August, the autonomous, democratic island that Beijing claims as its own.

Opportunities for US And China

Asserting that “the president sees the United States and China as being engaged in a fierce competition, but that competitiveness should not spill over into conflict or confrontation,” Sullivan told reporters and promised Biden will respond later. He added that Biden would search at opportunities for cooperation between the US and China in other sectors, such as public health or climate change.

More than ten years had passed since the beginning of the relationship.

In discussions that lasted 78 hours and covered almost 17,000 miles together, the two leaders are well acquainted, according to Biden’s estimations. In 2011 and 2012, when both were vice presidents of their respective nations, they spent time together in China and the United States.

Leaders of The Group of 20 in Bali, Indonesia

The Biden administration recently unveiled a new national security strategy that views an increasingly authoritarian China as the most significant threat to the international order. This meeting on Monday took place in conjunction with a gathering of the leaders of the Group of 20 in Bali, Indonesia.

Aim to Kill Two Birds with One Stone

According to Stanford University’s Oriana Skylar Mastro, a China scholar, “the Biden administration would aim to kill two birds with one stone – solicit Chinese backing on matters like reining in North Korea and climate change – to create some basis for collaboration between China and the US.”

Pak Suzuki reopens bookings for all vehicles.

Pak Suzuki reopens bookings for all vehicles.

Import restrictions hinder Pakistan industry bookings for all vehicle.

Multiple automakers, including Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC), were forced to cut production to deal with rising inflation. However, PSMC appears to be attempting to pick up the pace by resuming bookings for all vehicles. The previous resumption was limited to a small number of models and units and was only available to corporate customers.

The current resumption is for all customers, though each model will be sold in accordance with a set limit. According to a Suzuki dealership, the current delivery time for all models is two months. PSMC has a great chance of increasing its sales in the coming months as a result of this development.

Since July, car sales have increased.

Despite a month-on-month increase in October, car sales fell 47% between July and October 2022, from 74,952 to 39,700 units, due to inflation, auto finance restrictions, and high interest rates. Interestingly, car sales increased from 9,213 in September to 11,129 in October, which is still far below the 17,413 in October 2021.

Following SBP’s relaxation of import quotas, the increase in sales and production in October shows signs of improvement. Except for Hyundai Nishat Motors Private Limited (HNMPL), all automakers saw a slight increase in sales, indicating a recovery.

PSMC, in particular, saw a 33% increase in month-over-month (MOM) sales figures in October, selling 8003 units versus 6006 units in September.

All automakers are now experiencing fewer non-production days (NPDs), indicating an impending increase in sales in the coming days.

Pakistan Release of ‘Joyland’ Unsure Following Complaints

Pakistan Release of 'Joyland' Unsure Following Complaints

Pakistan Oscar entry faces uncertainty at home despite int’l acclaim.

The somewhat forbidden themes of trans love in “Joyland,” together with a letter from a senator, might end up working against the movie’s release in Pakistan. The previously certified Movie Joyland was labelled “uncertified” in a letter sent by the Ministry of Information and Broadcast on Saturday, according to Senator Mushtaq Ahmed of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

The letter said that after the movie’s release, “written complaints were received that movie contains highly objectionable material, which does not conform with the social values and moral standards of our society and is clearly repugnant to the norms of decency and morality as laid out in Section 9 of Motion Picture Ordinance 1979.” Furthermore, it was claimed that the “uncertification” of the Movie will have an impact on Pakistani theatres that are accredited by the CBFC (Central Board of Movie Certification).

Two major issues are raised by the letter that Ahmed shared. It begins by mentioning objections that were made after the “release of the Movie,” despite the fact that November 18 is actually that date in Pakistan. Outside of the censor boards, it is unknown who saw the Movie and lodged the complaints.

ICT

Second, as a result of the 18th Amendment, only the ICT (Islamabad Capital Territory), all national cantonments, and the two provinces that haven’t yet created their own boards—KP and Balochistan—fall under the CBFC’s purview.

The Movie was approved for release by all censor boards, with only minor objections and suggestions for changes made for general public viewing. The implementation of the letter’s recommendations will demonstrate that the federal government has taken precedence over the recommendations of the provincial censor boards.

The board eventually certified the movie, despite several members’ initial reservations about the Movies subject matter and uncertainty about how audiences would react to a love tale involving a male and a transgender person.

The source told the publication, “Yes, it has been passed and certified with adjustments that have been communicated to the producers, and we are not sure of any other progress thus far.

Punjab Censor Board:

Officials from the Punjab Censor Board have also confirmed this. “We are aware of no letters being sent out by the government. The Movie has received certification and is prepared for release from our end,” the person continued, requesting anonymity.

Distribution Club, the firm in charge of distributing “Joyland” in Pakistan, is attempting to find a medium ground. “Yes, we have gotten a letter from CBFC asking us to halt the Movies  release, but we haven’t heard anything directly from the federal or provincial boards. We are 90% certain that Pakistani consumers will be able to see “Joyland” because the movie has already been certified and is ready for release, according to a representative of the Distribution Club.

Senator Ahmed requested last week that the PDM-led government halt the release of “Joyland” in Pakistan due to the Movie’s anti-Islamic’ ideals.

It’s a trans love story that has already received praise for the LGBT topics it covers and earned the Queer Palm award at the Cannes Movie Festival. “The Information Ministry must immediately prevent the movie from being released in Pakistan because this is nothing less than an anti-Islamic attack on the institutions of Nikkah and marriage,” Ahmed stated in the video.

Team “Joyland,” which consists of Alina Khan, Rasti Farooq, and Abdullah Siddiqui, sent a message on social media about the alleged ban on their movie:

Production Team:

“They’re doing it once more. Smear campaigns to outlaw “Joyland” “The sentence was read. The statement continued, “We need your assistance to ensure we don’t let these violent, insensitive, zealots prevail again,” calling it a bad day for all artists in Pakistan. The production team also requested that viewers use the hashtag #Release”Joyland” on Twitter to show their support for the movie.

The message went on to say that “#Ban”Joyland” has been trending on number three in Pakistan because these people are doing a paid slander campaign.” However, we’ll rely on you all to naturally trend #Release”Joyland.” The final sentence of the declaration read, “Pakistani artists deserve better. When will this vandalism stop?

There is a paid smear campaign going around against “Joyland,” a movie that made history for Pakistani cinema and was approved by all censor boards, but now authorities are caving in to pressure from some nefarious people who haven’t even seen the movie, Sarwat Gilani wrote on the microblogging website, tagging the Ministry of Information and Broadcast’s official handle.

Pakistani Movie:

The Churails actor went on to say, “It is shameful that a Pakistani Movie that was produced over the course of six years by 200 Pakistanis and received standing ovations everywhere from Toronto to Cannes. Don’t steal our people’s pride and happiness now!”

Then, she said, “Nobody is being forced to watch it! So don’t make someone watch it if they don’t want to! The audience in Pakistan are educated enough to choose what they want to watch or not. Pakistanis should decide! Don’t belittle their intelligence or our efforts!”

Other musicians, like Osman Khalid Butt and Tooba Siddiqui, expressed displeasure with the boycott demand for “Joyland.” The “Balu Mahi” star said, “Can you please confirm the legitimacy of this letter (posted by a member of the Senate), since if “Joyland” has been designated an uncertified Movie, I’ve got some problems,” while tagging the Ministry of Information and Broadcast’s official handle.

Joyland:

He went on, “”Joyland” was authorised for release in August by the CFBC. So the concept and content of the movie were not a problem for the Board members, right? The movie is scheduled for release on November 18, making point two both factually wrong and seriously deceptive.”

Butt remarked, “It is really disappointing to see you give in to the pressure of “written complaints” (by who, exactly? ), especially as a country that has hailed “Joyland’s” numerous milestones and accomplishments. Where and how did these individuals view the movie?)”

It’s confusing to me that (a week before release) ‘Joyland’ is somehow inappropriate for our public after creating history at Cannes, earning widespread international acclaim, and Pakistan itself nominated the movie for Best International Feature at the Oscars,” the speaker added.

Chupke Chupke:

The “The actor from “Chupke Chupke” continued, “There are testimonials from people who have actually watched the Movie at Cannes and TIFF (not those judging by rumour or bias), who swear there is absolutely nothing unpleasant about “Joyland.” The same thing happened with Verna, Maalik, and “Zindagi Tamasha,” as we’ve seen.”

Butt continued to make his point, “Please let our theatre not be held hostage by what looks to be a wholly arbitrary Ordinance for once. Where do we draw the line when it comes to trans representation but there seems to be no problem with hyperviolence, regressive themes, adult jokes and content, or overt sexualization on screen?”

He stated, “Give “Joyland” a suitable rating if its topics are too delicate or mature for mainstream audiences (this is just a hunch; I haven’t watched the movie). There is history. Don’t stop us from seeing the movie, though.”

Siddiqui posted a story on Instagram, saying, “A movie produced in Pakistan with Pakistani talent won international acclaim and was approved by all Pakistani censor boards. But no. Flagbearers of our convictions would not permit it to happen. When will this industry advance, I wonder.”

She then turned to the fashion designer and said, “see the movie at the very least. Maria B. was so sad and disappointing.”

Imran Khan takes a U-turn on US conspiracy narrative

Imran Khan takes a U-turn on US conspiracy narrative

Khan revises US conspiracy narrative, citing alleged US role in April.

Even though he claimed Washington treated Pakistan like a “slave” and that he wanted to mend relations with it, Imran stated in an interview with the Financial Times that he wanted to work with it. The former prime minister declared that, if re-elected, he would no longer “blame” the US and would prefer a “dignified” relationship.

Positive Relationship With United States

The individual said, “As far as I’m concerned, the alleged conspiracy is over and behind me. Both PM Shehbaz Sharif and the US reject it. “The Pakistan I want to lead must have good relations with everyone, including the United States,” he proclaimed.

Local Government Was More Responsible Than The US

“In the US, we’ve been treated like hired guns, and we’ve had master-servant or master-slave relationships with them. Nevertheless, Imran stated in the interview that he held his own governments more responsible than the US for that.

Moscow Trip Was Embarrassing

Imran, a former prime minister, said that his trip to Moscow the day before the invasion of Ukraine in February was “embarrassing,” even if he claimed the US retaliated against him for it. He added that it had been planned months in advance. How are you meant to pay off your loans if they keep getting bigger when your economy contracts and some of the IMF initiatives cause it to do so? he asked.

Consumption has collapsed… So, I ask: How are we going to pay off our debts? Without a doubt, default is where we are headed.
